Students can request to join the program at any level prior to applying to the Russian Overseas Flagship.

Additional Requirements
Location | Activity | Description |
BMC and Overseas | Kazakh Language and Culture | Student complete Kazakh language and culture modules prior to starting their Russian Overseas Flagship program. They then enroll in a Kazakh language course during the fall semester of the Russian Overseas Flagship program. |
BMC and Overseas | Tutoring | Students meet individually with tutors. These meetings are in addition to time spent in class. Students can expect to meet with tutors 1 to 2 hours per week. |
BMC and Overseas | Assessments | Students are required to take language proficiency assessments, usually conducted twice per calendar year. |
BMC and Overseas | Extracurricular Activities | Students participate in planned program extracurricular activities. Time of commitment varies. |
Overseas | Pre-Russian Overseas Flagship study abroad | Students must complete a minimum of 6 weeks of participation in an intensive overseas Russian language program at the secondary level or above prior to admission to the Russian Overseas Flagship in Almaty, Kazakhstan. |
Overseas | Direct Enrollment | Students enroll in one subject-area course along KazNU students during the fall semester of the Russian Overseas Flagship. |
Overseas | Internship | Students complete a professional internship during the spring semester of the Russian Overseas Flagship. The total time spent interning is 200 hours. |

Flagship Certification
The Language Flagship recognizes three levels of certification for students who complete Flagship programs.
Flagship Certification with Distinction: Completion of a Domestic Flagship Program and an Overseas Capstone experience, including direct enrollment and an internship, as well as meeting or exceeding the proficiency minimum of ILR 3 in speaking, reading and listening. Students must demonstrate ILR 3 proficiency or higher in all three modalities to be eligible for certification with distinction.
Flagship Certification: Completion of a Domestic Flagship Program and an Overseas Capstone experience, including direct enrollment and an internship, as well as meeting or exceeding the proficiency minimum of ILR 3 in speaking, and an ILR 2+ in reading and listening.
Flagship Completion: Completion of a Domestic Flagship Program and an Overseas Capstone experience, including direct enrollment and an internship, as well as the demonstration of a post-capstone proficiency of less than ILR 3 in speaking.

Lizzy HC '19 completed the Russian Overseas Flagship program and is now a program assistant at the National Endowment for Democracy and working on her master's degree at Georgetown University.
