Presented by Professor Monique Scott, Curator Carrie Robbins, and College Archivist Allison Mills as part of the bmc 2020 Five Years Later Remembrance Event – The College has taken some visible strides to change or remove the memorialization of M. Carey Thomas from campus. But who was M. Carey Thomas? And how did her presence loom over the College throughout the 20th century and into the 21st? This panel considers Thomas’s foundational contributions to Bryn Mawr as the second college president, ardent advocate for women’s rights and outspoken racist, antisemite and eugenicist. And it considers the ways in which her presence on campus buildings and in campus artwork needed to change to begin the long process of reckoning and repair.
