Graduate Student Jobs in Special Collections

posted August 30, 2023

Special Collections is hiring two graduate students as Visitor Services and Cataloging Assistants

The Visitor Services and Cataloging Assistants will oversee Special Collections’ public reading room in Canaday Library. They will greet and assist visitors; help them use the books, papers, artifacts, or artwork they need; and ensure the safety of the collections in use. They will respond to remote reference inquiries to the department or the curators and archivist. The Assistant will also contribute to the development of the catalogs of the Department’s collections, including Tripod, the TriCollege Libraries Archives and Manuscripts Database, TriCollege Digital Collections, and Triarte. The work may include cataloging or enriching catalog records for rare books and books for young readers; processing and describing archival or manuscript collections; researching art or artifact holdings and improving records for them; or reviewing and improving metadata for the digital collections. The position requires a team player interested in gaining experience with all aspects of the work of cultural institutions like libraries and museums. It requires public service and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work creatively within descriptive cataloging guidelines to make collections accessible.

This is a part-time (10-15 hour/week) position. The position extends through the 2023-2024 academic year, with a possibility of extension into the summer. This job pays $20.00/hour. Please send Marianne Hansen (mhansen@brynmawr.edu) a CV and letter of application.

Job Requirements: Open to registered Bryn Mawr graduate students who are interested in working with historical and cultural collections. Experience working with rare books, archives, art works, or other original materials would be helpful, but someone who is welcoming, careful, organized, and interested in making our collections accessible will be successful in the job.
