Alum News: Celebrating the career of Temple's Therese Dolan (Ph.D. History of Art, '79)
Friends and colleagues gathered Monday, December 11th, to celebrate the career of Therese Dolan (Ph.D. History of Art ’79) who has retired as Professor of Art History from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. Professor Dolan taught at Temple for nearly forty years. The honorific reception was packed with faculty, administrative colleagues (including Temple’s president), and students. Her service is etched into the legacy of Temple’s Department of Art History. In speeches in her honor, her colleagues noted that Professor Dolan was long admired for her work on behalf of the Temple community as Chair of the Department of Art History (1998-2004) and then as Interim Dean of the Tyler School of Art (2008-09).
Professor Dolan brings a formidable scholarly legacy with her into retirement. She is widely recognized as one of the foremost scholars of Manet, having authored dozens of articles on the painter and the book Manet, Wagner, and the Musical Culture of their Time (Ashgate, 2013) and edited volume Perspectives on Manet (Ashgate, 2012). As an exceptionally productive scholar, she has also authored Inventing Reality: The Paintings of John Moore (Hudson Hills Press, 1996) and Gavarni and the Critics (University of Michigan Press, 1981), as well as articles spanning a broad sweep of French Impressionists and Romanticists. We especially look forward to her forthcoming Salut! The French Presence in Philadelphia, co-authored with Lynn Miller to be published by Temple University Press. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences congratulates Professor Dolan and wishes her the warmest regards looking forward into retirement.
