Although social service professionals are ethically bound to increase their awareness of cultural differences, they lack specific skills set to actively engage in these often-challenging discussions.  Even supervisors are ill equipped to engage their supervisees around issues of difference.  Instead, conversations often remain in the “safe zone”. This workshop will bridge the gap between cultural awareness and mindful facilitation of the therapeutic encounter.

Presenter: Donna J Harris, LCSW is the Clinical Director of Intercultural Counselling, LLC, located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia.  For over 30 years she has empowered clients to succeed in their personal and professional relationships.  In her private practice, she uses a trauma-focused, relational psychodynamic lens in her work with individuals, couples and groups.  She is also clinical faculty at Bryn Mawr College, Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research.  Donna also supervises social workers and counselors.  Her work focuses on helping people engage others in difficult conversations related to differences in social identities.  Donna’s mission is to push us just beyond our comfort zone in order to forge deeper relationships.

Ms. Harris founded Intercultural Network LLC, to address the needs of organizations.   In order to work with diverse populations, staff, clinicians and educators need to first understand our collective history of systemic oppression and how that has impacted them.  They then are in need of specific skills to navigate what can be challenging conversations between colleagues and with client systems.  Intercultural Network specializes in helping organizations determine how they can become more inclusive and diverse as well as teaching a skill set to help people work more effectively with each other and the client populations they serve.
