Delivery: Synchronous Virtual Classroom via Zoom
This workshop is designed to enrich the psychodynamic base of those who have interest in psychodynamic psychotherapy, e.g. a clinical focus on the patient’s inner world, the therapeutic relationship, and how these variables interact with the vicissitudes of the patient’s social environment.
Upon completion of this training, participants will begin to: 1) understand how young adulthood brings together remnants from the past with biologic, psychological and social imperatives to process, leading to complicated conflictual and defensive themes; 2) learn how to address this material and the connection this has to strengthening the therapeutic alliance and deepening of the analytic process; and 3) identify the emergence of transference and countertransference reactions and the potential for enactments between the patient and therapist.
Diversity will be addressed in consideration of the connection between the patient’s internal psychology and their cultural background along with discussion of the transference, countertransference vulnerabilities and enactments that can occur in cross-racial and socioeconomic dyads. This training is appropriate for post-master’s degreed practitioners with at least two years of direct practice experience, preferably with college-aged individuals, as well as for social workers providing therapy and/or clinical support to young adults.
Participants are invited to bring a case presentation for group discussion.
Presenter: Jill Ragozzino McElligott, MSS, LCSW, is a 1999 graduate of the Bryn Mawr College of Social Work & Social Research, where she was honored with the Pat McPherson Award for academic excellence. She has presented in our GSSWR programs and was recently asked to teach and supervise in our psychodynamic certificate program. For over 20 years, she has treated college students in psychotherapy, as part of the counseling centers at Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges, and she was asked to develop a psychodynamic training module as part of Bryn Mawr’s internship & post-master’s fellowship training program.
She completed her post-graduate education at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia, where she graduated as a certified psychoanalyst in 2009. She was recognized as the teacher of the year for her course on psychodynamic treatment with college students, as well as numerous awards for her course in handling defense and resistance in the clinical process. She also completed a Clinical Social Work Fellowship with the American Psychoanalytic Association, where she studied feminist revisions of female development, and she was also recognized with a Stephen Mitchell Scholarship, where she studied psychoanalytic diversity in treating inner conflict and trauma.
She also teaches psychodynamics in multiple contexts at various local medical residency programs, where she has received numerous volunteer teaching awards and has provided Grand Round presentations on the clinical process of psychoanalysis and treating self-defeating personalities.
