What's happening at your internship? We would love to hear what kind of work you are doing!
When we first arrive, morning medications are due. Most of these medications are given by mouth in a syringe. We may be giving medication to squirrels, hawks, doves and even skunks. Once meds are done, interns start on rechecks, which have been assigned to track the patients' progress. Rechecks can be anything from weighing the animal, performing wound care to deciding if the animal is ready for release. At the end of the day, pm meds are due and then we close for the day. Although we have a general routine, no day is the same!
Why did you apply for this internship?
I am interested in applying to veterinary school a few years after I graduate and I am particularly interested in working with wildlife. I thought this internship would give me a better understanding of what actually working in the field is like. It's also very fun!
What has been your favorite part of this internship?
At the Wildlife Center, there is always something new to learn. Each species is so unique, that I never felt like I knew all there was to know.
What is most rewarding about your internship?
Getting to interact with wild animals at a proximity that the general public never gets to is such a privilege and inspires me every day.
