President's Message to the Community on SCOTUS Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

The below message was sent by President Cassidy on June 24, 2022

To the Bryn Mawr Community,

Today the Supreme Court announced its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending legal access to abortion in much of the United States. This decision will also have profound social and economic effects, including on educational attainment and job opportunities, and these effects will be most pronounced for people of color and those with limited income.

As of the writing of this message, the right to an abortion continues to exist in Pennsylvania. Our students will have access to the same healthcare as was available prior to this decision while on our campus. When students return to campus, our Health Center personnel will, as always, be available to them to help answer any questions regarding their care.

The College will hold a teach-in in late July on the Court’s decision and the future of reproductive rights in the U.S. with Professor of History Sharon Ullman; Linda Wharton ’77, who served as co-lead counsel for Planned Parenthood v. Casey when she was at the Women’s Law Project; Sue Frietsche ’77, senior staff attorney and founder and director of the Western Pennsylvania office of the Women’s Law Project; and Mindy Steinberg McGrath ’00, senior director for policy and communication at the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association. We will provide more information about this Zoom webinar in the near future.

Bryn Mawr will work with other colleges, universities, and organizations to advocate for all adversely affected by the Supreme Court’s decision.
