The message below was sent to students, faculty and staff on April 20, 2017.
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
We are pleased to share news of revisions to our undergraduate student job classifications and pay scale. These revisions are based on the idea that all Bryn Mawr students share a high level of qualification for employment and therefore many different pay grades are less justified. The revisions were shaped by constructive dialogue at last year’s Community Day of Learning, with SGA officers, and at follow-up meetings, as well as a review by an outside panel of experts and benchmarking against peer institutions. The changes will go into effect May 15, 2017.
The revised student employment plan consolidates the range of student campus jobs into two job categories and recognizes the incremental value that experience in a particular job brings. The base wage rate, which will apply to almost all jobs, will be $10.00 per hour to start, an increase from the current $9.50 and a higher rate than most peer institutions. (We will not, however, change the student earnings expectation used to calculate financial aid, so this increase will not be offset by a reduction in grant aid.)
Although this hourly rate may not automatically increase each year, individual students may qualify for an additional $0.20 per hour in each subsequent year in the same position, depending on the number of hours accrued. A small number of jobs, mostly associated with significant supervisory responsibility, will be assigned by the Student Employment Office to a second category, which will be paid $10.75 to start. Full details will be posted to the HR website by May 1.
The Student Employment Office is happy to help managers understand how the new pay scale will impact student jobs in their areas and to answer questions. We will also offer an information session, details of which will be advertised in the Daily Digest in the coming days.
This plan represents a substantial investment by the College, with a goal of promoting equity across functional areas and increasing pay for most students.
We will evaluate the effectiveness of the employment structure after three years. We welcome your feedback at any time.
We thank the students, faculty, and staff who have collaborated closely and thoughtfully to adjust our system, so that we can better support our students and the core values of our community.
With best wishes,
