Associate Professor of Mathematics Erica J. Graham, a founder of the Mathematically Gifted and Black (MGB) website, is a winner of the Association for Women in Mathematics’ 2022 AWM Presidential Recognition Award.

Graham, along with MGB website co-founders Raegan Higgins, associate professor of mathematics at Texas Tech University, Candice Price, associate professor of mathematics and statistics at Smith College, and Shelby Wilson of Johns Hopkins University, were honored at the AWM Research Symposium at the University of Minnesota in June 2022.

“We are pleased to receive the 2022 AWM Presidential Recognition Award,” the founders said.

“As the founders and directors of Mathematically Gifted and Black, we appreciate AWM’s acknowledgement of the impact our work has on increasing the visibility of historically and systemically excluded individuals in the mathematical sciences. We are committed to continuing this valuable work.”

The MGB website, which was founded in 2016, “profiles nearly 200 inspiring lives in mathematics, using first-person storytelling and contextualizing math in terms of a full life experience,” the AWM explained.

“Every year during Black History Month, the site highlights 28 living Black mathematicians with a photo and their responses to questions about their lives and mathematical interests.”

The AWM Presidential Recognition Award, was established in 2014 to recognize those individuals who, or programs that have significantly increased and/or supported women in mathematics. The first award was presented at the 2015 AWM Symposium and is presented at the banquet at the biennial AWM Research Symposium.
