Emily Shein '22, who is double majoring in German and philosophy, will be traveling to Thüringen, Germany, this fall as part of the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program.
"I requested to be placed in Thüringen, specifically, because the state exists at the intersection of many of my academic interests; the German Enlightenment began in Weimar, Thüringen, so I will have the chance to walk in the footsteps of many of the philosophers I have studied during my time at Bryn Mawr."
This will be the first extended stay outside the United States for Shein, A native of Red Hook, N.Y.
"I'm looking forward to learning more about contemporary Jewish identity in Germany by getting involved with Jewish life in my host community. I have been teaching myself Yiddish and I would love to connect with Yiddish speakers in my host community to continue learning and practicing. Additionally, I hope to work as a docent at a local Holocaust museum or concentration camp memorial site. Beyond this proposed community engagement project, I am eager to simply immerse myself in a new community and to enjoy my adventure of living abroad for the first time."
After her Fulbright, Shein plans to attend graduate school to pursue a Ph.D. in 18th-19th century German philosophy.
